Autumn's First ER visit & broken bone (and hopefully last)!

Autumn got to experience firsthand what Shelby experienced with an ER visit and fractured wrist. Last week we decided to walk to her school to see how long it takes from our house. When we got there I let the girls play on the school playground. Autumn was on her way to a different area of the playground to go slide and decided to try out the monkey bars on her own on the way. In her head she imagined going across them quickly to get where she was going. It turned out to be harder than she thought and she fell almost as soon as she grabbed the first bar. She landed on her right arm and was crying and crying and told me she thought it was broken.

We walked the twelve minutes home and she cried the whole way. When she was still crying after we got home I knew we definitely had a problem. We called Corry and headed to the ER after he got home. Autumn had stopped crying when he got home and was able to eat dinner and I gave her a bath because she was filthy from the fall (and I knew it would be harder to bathe her after her arm had a splint on it). Word to the wise: Long-sleeved pajamas are a good idea for the extreme cool temperatures at the hospital but not if you have a broken arm and require a splint! She now has sleeveless winter pj's!

The ER wait was brutal. We arrived at 8 and left shortly before 2. Autumn's arm wasn't hurting too badly because we gave her Tylenol before we left. We had to ask for more around 11 at the hospital because her arm was really hurting her. So, in the end, they x-rayed her arm and said that her wrist was fractured and wrapped it up for her.

We went to the Orthopedist today and he said that both her radius and ulna are fractured. The radius is fractured all the way across and the ulna is just cracked a little. Luckily she doesn't require any type of surgery but did get the long arm cast up to her shoulder. She goes back in three weeks and we'll find out if she gets a shorter cast or if she can wear the removeable brace. Her restrictions are a little stricter than I remember Shelby's being. The Dr. said that she needs to wear her sling at all times, no outside play at school, and no video games or anything of that sort where she uses her thumbs and may tilt her wrist. None of it is too big of a deal for her except for keeping the sling on 24/7. I hadn't been having her sleep in it up to this point so we'll see how that goes.

Oh no!!! I'm so sorry. And to break her arm on the day you decided to try WALKING of all things. I bet that was a LONG walk home- doesn't sound like a very fun ER visit either. Hope she's feeling a lot better with her cast, but the sling all the time? That's a little crazy. Our ortho doc didn't seem to care if Alli wore it at all- only if it made her more comfortable he said- maybe a different break (and no pin) requires different treatment. Hope the weeks fly by and she gets it off soon! Keep us updated.

Wow, you and Julie really ARE living parallel lives. I bet you two will get preggy with # 3 at the same time too!!
